Somerset Signs Australian All-Rounder Will Sutherland for County

Championship and T20 Blast

Somerset has secured the services of Will Sutherland, the Australian all-rounder, for the upcoming County Championship and T20 Blast seasons. The 24-year-old, who currently represents Australia A, will join Somerset in April, provided Victoria’s Sheffield Shield season concludes by March 21–25. Sutherland is slated to participate in the group stages of the T20 Blast until the middle of July.

Originally signing with Essex for the summer of 2023, Sutherland had to withdraw due to a stress fracture in his back. Somerset’s success in the Blast in 2023 and their strong history in the County Championship align with my goals for the game. I look forward to making a positive impact on the field, getting to know the staff and players, and challenging myself in English conditions. I’m eager to commence my maiden county cricket stint with Somerset, especially after receiving positive feedback from Peter Siddle about the club and Taunton.”

In the 2022-23 season, Sutherland captained Victoria in the Sheffield Shield, boasting 115 first-class wickets at an average of 25.32 and notching a maiden century. Following his recovery from a back injury, he led Australia A to victory in a September one-day series against New Zealand. Sutherland has also been a consistent performer for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.

Andy Hurry, Somerset’s cricket director,

acknowledged Sutherland’s global recognition and versatile skills in all formats Our discussions with him reflect his desire for improvement, pursuit of honors, and eagerness to contribute to a successful team. This signing aligns with the collective goals of Will and Somerset County Cricket Club.
